BASIC HISTORY; Winry was born in the small town of Resembool to Urey and Sara Rockbell, two surgeons, in 1899. A few short years after her birth, her parents decided to go help out the Ishvalan War effort, thus leaving a saddened Winry at home with her grandmother. Soon, Winry grew used to her parents being gone, understanding that the injured people needed them a bit more than her, and had finally grown used to it by the time she turned ten, but then tragedy struck; shortly into her tenth year, word was brought to her grandmother and herself that her parents were casualties of war, thus leaving her an orphan and in the sole care of her grandmother, Pinako.
During the year after her parents death, which was filled with many tears of grief, Winry's childhood friends did something very incredibly stupid. Edward and Alphonse Elric attempted to bring their mother back to life, resulting of the loss on Alphonse's whole body and Ed's left leg, and then the lost of Ed's right arm in exchange for Al's soul to be placed into a metal suit. Of course, at the time of all this happening, Winry knew nothing of it, and when two of her best friends were at her door, during a storm in the dark of night, one bleeding to death and the other's voice coming from a metal suit, she was quite scared, but managed to hold herself together enough to help her grandmother in administering emergency surgery and saving his life. A little bit into Ed's recovery found the visitation oflieutenant colonel Roy Mustang and his second lieutenant Riza Hawkeye came to recruit the boys, and Winry showed her obvious dislike for the military, and continued to do so until second lieutenant Haweye spoke to her.
Eventually, Ed agreed to join the military and requested an automail arm and leg be made for him, and Winry, dead set on helping him, made his arm herself, as well as helping him in his recovery over the next year. After the leaving of the Elric brothers, Winry began to spend her time more and more on automail, until their next visit, in which they had major Alex Armstrong with them. Winry had been quite happy to see the boys, until Ed had showed her what had happened to his arm, which instead of being damagd, was completely destroyed. Wanting to help out all she could, Winry quickly started a new arm for him from scratch, and finished it in three days. Only after they left again had she realized she'd forgotten a bolt. Soon, she receives a call to come to Central in order to fix Ed's arm, which had stopped working on him. Racked with guilt, Winry was quick to arrive, only to find Ed found the loss of use in his arm was his own fault, which Winry was all fine to go along with.
With her visit to Central, Winry befriended the Hughes family, finding herself bonding with all of them, and soon found herself leaving, and, to her happiness, she found herself in Rush Valley. Soon after arriving, many events occur; the group finds and befriends the elusive pickpocket Paninya, Ed's watch having been stolen by her, and Winry eventually becomes the apprentice to the mechanic Atelier Garfiel, and the boys leave. Winry soon integrated herself into the community of Rush Valley, until Ed and Al and co. arrive and she fixes Ed's arm, again, and chooses to travel to Central with them to visit the Hughes family. Once there, after having been unknowingly lied to by Mustang and Hawkeye, Winry soon finds that Maes Hughes was murdered shortly after their last visit.
